Who is Aasim?
Aasim is native of Arlington, attending Lubber Run Pre-School, Patrick Henry Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Middle School, and Washington-Liberty High School (everybody do the Generals rumble!).
He is a chemical and environmental engineer by training (s/o Virginia Tech, go Hokies!) and has spent his career working on environmental and public-sector issues. For more than 30 years, he has called Arlington home, living, working, and building deep roots in this community.
As the son of Indian immigrants, Aasim grew up with a strong appreciation for the sacrifices his parents made and for the opportunities they provided. Aasim spent his formative years in Arlington, under the shadow of 9/11 and the country's "War on Terror," where society was conditioned to criminalize black and brown people. His lived experience reflects a unique understanding of Arlington's particular place in the world - a place where we value human rights, while predicating our economic prosperity on violations of those very rights.
Aasim is deeply involved in community organizations. He shows up for his neighbors, listens to their concerns, and works alongside them to effect change. He has been active in local mutual aid and organizing against our local's government's facilitation of the military industrial complex, believing that true security comes from meeting people’s needs.
In July 2024, Aasim connected with other Arlington residents who were horrified by the genocide occurring in Palestine and Arlington’s complicity in it. Through their shared grief, they built a powerful community movement against genocide and for human rights and dignity. This connection with his neighbors inspired Aasim to become more involved in local politics and more creative in how he engages with city, state, and federal officials. Starting in the Fall of 2025, Aasim has been an instrumental in leading the Arlington Apartheid Divest campaign, which seeks to end Arlington’s collaboration with the Virginia Israel Advisory Board.
Aasim is running because he believes in democracy and the democratic process, something that has not been demonstrated and practiced in the office of Treasurer for more than 30 years. He believes that the elected office of Treasurer should reflect the people of Arlington and their morals, ethics, and values. Specifically, our taxes should not be invested in oil and gas companies that contribute to climate change, predatory banks that take advantage of underrepresented communities, or weapons manufacturers that profit off of human rights violations.
Aasim can be found around Arlington scrolling his phone, dunking on Takis and yelling at Board Members, and hooping at Fairlington CC and the Fort Barnard courts.
